Challenge
How can we give children the appropriate tools to learn digital citizenship in a safe environment before launching their online lives?
Product Goal
The goal is to create a website that will teach children good citizenship skills before they are introduced to the social world of technology through a closed and moderated social media platform and learning management system.

PROBLEM
Nearly all participation in modern society requires a digital aspect to it. This has come to be known as “Digital Citizenship”, which involves all aspects of accessing, maintaining, and participating in online environments. Youth are exposed to the benefits and potential dangers of the internet at earlier and earlier stages in life. Access to the internet at a young age requires significant education and practice to maintain digital citizenship in a safe, courteous, and responsible way. While there are educational tools out there, little prepares an individual for the actual experience of developing their
online life through social media.

PROCESS
Target Audience Research
I started by conducting research on different age groups in relation to devices used and their motivations along with digital citizenship awareness to nail down a specific target audience for the platform and decide whether an app or website would be appropriate.

Competitive Analysis
I then conducted a competitive analysis with other platforms that are to educate youth on digital citizenship and listed the pros and cons of three main competitors to identify any market gaps.

Survey Design
Through the survey I created, I was able to get input from 4 different parents and educators with children in the target audience age range to pinpoint what features and elements would be useful.

From this survey, I learned that their children are learning about digital citizenship both at home and in school and that 100% of them don't believe their children are well prepared to navigate life online which validated the need for an educational platform.

Concept Development
To begin concept development, I conducted a 5-minute word association session and organized each word into different categories to get an overview of the topic. After deciding on the target audience of ages 9-12 and the concept idea of creating a closed and monitored social media and learning management platform, I began mapping out the website and navigation.

Early Wireframes

User Testing
From the first round of user testing on the early wireframes, I learned that Etikit was being portrayed more as a learning management system as opposed to a social media platform and that it needed more clarification in the navigation system and hierarchy.
The approach
Using this feedback, I adjusted and simplified the hierarchy and organization of the site for users to easier navigate. From here I also decided that it would be best to split the site into two main components consisting of a moderator and a student view.
